When it comes to grants for your higher education you can get them from the federal or state government. A government grant gives you money for college that you don't have to repay. Let's first consider the grants available through the federal government.

There are two main federal government grants available. The first is the Pell Grant which gives up to three thousand dollars per student based on their individual financial needs. The second option is the Federal Supplemental Education Opportunity which gives between one hundred dollars and four thousand dollars to students based on their needs. You can also get specialized government grants such as those available through the National Health Services and the Armed forces.

Then there are state government grants. The state also offers scholarships and tuition assistance programs depending on the state that you live in. In order to get information on the current state government grants available you should contact your state agency for higher education. One popular option is the State Student Incentive Grant (SSIG) which is offered jointly by the United States government and the individual state.

Lastly you should consider private grants. These are scholarships which are given from the resources of your own university or school. There are a lot of private grants available. A grant that you receive from you school doesn't have to be repaid and are considered an award to the student.

Applying for College Grants

Applying for a government grant for your education is easier than other grants. By completing a FAFSA you can have your financial need calculated by the government in order to determine your level of federal aid. However, there are a few things that you need to be aware of when you are considering a government grant for education. The first is that the government places a limitation on the grants available. For those going to a community college the expenses are cheaper so most of your costs will be covered by a government grant. For those at a private college the government grant may not be enough to cover all your costs.
